SUMMARY:Symposihmm 💬 The New Orality
DESCRIPTION:In recent years\, concerns over social media’s impact on cognitive abilities has been growing. While it’s very hard to prove a direct causal link with online platforms\, studies have show that since the early-to-mid-2010s\, literacy and abilities like reasoning and problem solving have been declining. \nIn tandem with this measured decline in literacy we see the theory that social media\, or short-form video content\, is ushering in a new age of orality gaining popularity. During the first oral era\, before the invention of the written word and widespread literacy\, the main way of sharing information was verbally. The switch to a literate culture is thought to not only have changed our relation with information\, but even to have reshaped our consciousness. Now\, with contemporary social media\, some theorists speculate that we’re in a second oral age\, where the characteristics of verbal communication are returning as the primary mode of transferring information within our network of online platforms. \nWith the Symposihmm: The New Orality we want to explore this pivotal moment. Are online platforms chipping away at our ability to read and understand? Are we entering a new oral age\, and what are the implications of this? Are there fruitful ways to push back against this shift\, or should we be searching for more meaningful ways to make sense of these new modalities so we can navigate our way through them? \n📋 Program\n13.30–14.45 \n\nWelcome and introduction\nTalk by Elise Swart on literacy and online platforms\nTalk by Kevin Munger on the new orality\n\n15.00–16.15 \n\nWorkshop “Make Your Own Slobject” by Maria Mombers\n“Video Exchange Trading Spawner Dopamine Hitting Point” by Max\n“Doom Scroll Rehab: Cache Cleanse” by Gjorgji Despodov\n\n16.30–18.00 \n\nTalk by Reginold Royston on podcasting\, new orality and the African mediascape\nA panel discussion on how various disciplines (try to) get a grip on the new orality\, featuring:\n\nFilmmakers Aylin Kuryel & Fırat Yücel\nResearchers Daniël de Zeeuw and Sal Hagen\nAuthor Maxime Garcia Diaz\n\n\n\nPerformance by Jonas Lund throughout the day \nPlease note that the video sharing activity\, workshops and performance won’t be broadcast on our livestream. SUMMARY:VIBE CODE MEAL PREP: A food-futuring workshop
DESCRIPTION:VIBE CODE MEAL PREP is a food-futuring workshop that uses AI to make personalized recipes combining food trends\, specialty ingredients\, and the contents of your fridge. For this edition of the workshop the trends we will explore are: Biomaxxing\, Doomer Food\, Spice Combinatorics and Minimum-Viable-Proteins (MVPs).  \nLLMs\, prompt engineering and data visualizations will be used to develop hybrid recipes that graft together divergent approaches to flavour & nutrition: hyperlocal plants\, alternative proteins\, and globally traded commodities.  \nAfter a short introduction we will taste-test unusual ingredients\, experiment with vibe code tools\, and work in small groups to create personalised AI-generated recipes using the ingredients on your weekly shopping list and current food trends. Each participant will leave with 4 unique recipes that they can cook\, share\, and discuss with friends and family the following week. Participants may also choose to share their recipes with digital communities that would be interested.   \nRequirements and Prep\n\nYou don’t need to have any experience with cooking or coding to join this workshop. You should bring a digital photo of the inside of your fridge and food cupboard OR be ready to write down a weekly shopping list if your fridge is currently empty. We would also like to ask you to bring one ingredient that is meaningful to you\, which we will incorporate into the workshop. The workshop will be conducted in English.   \nThe Hmm experiments…\nThis event is part of a series of programs the we are developing with The Hmm\, where we give space in our studio for our community to explore new ideas and experiment with workshops as part of our public program. \n\nWhat you need to know\n\n📅 Date: Saturday 6 June 2026\n🕗 Times: 14.00 – 17.00 CEST\n📍 Location: The Hmm’s studio\, NDSM-plein 125\, 1033 WC Amsterdam\n🎟 Tickets: €12\,50 regular\, €9\,50 students\n\nAs these workshops are more intimate sessions\, there is a limited supply of tickets available.
