SUMMARY:Echoes from Afar: Build your own archive
DESCRIPTION:Over the past years we’ve seen an increase in censorship\, shadow-banning\, and blocking of accounts across large social media platforms like Instagram. Many artists\, designers\, and cultural and social organisations\, rely on these platforms to connect with their communities and share their stories and their work. But what if we can build our own archives and websites\, and create our own networks to share our stories\, as a way to keep authorship and intention in our own hands? \n\n\nThis hybrid workshop\, led by Kexin Hong and Yiyao Wei\, begins with an introduction to Echoes from Afar\, an open-source\, living\, online archive that explores how digital infrastructures can challenge conventional forms of representation while opening up space for Asian diasporic communities to narrate their own stories. In its approach to storytelling\, the project seeks to safeguard the integrity of personal narratives\, to cultivate plurality and openness in how stories surface and circulate\, and to lay the groundwork for a living archive that makes space for richer\, more textured forms of visibility in the place of flattened or reductive images. \n\n\nIn the first part of the workshop\, participants will learn about Echoes from Afar and the basics of self-uploading and managing artworks on the platform\, so that participants can begin contributing their own work if they would like to. In the second part of the workshop\, we will learn about the open-source workflow behind the archive\, showing how participants can build their own websites or archives using free and accessible tools that require no prior coding experience. SUMMARY:Cyberdeck workshop: build your own 'mesh-berry' 🫐
DESCRIPTION:Hand-soldered cyberdecks are all over the internet. The cyberdecks we know from cyberpunk fiction and hacker culture were improvised machines—originally appearing in William Gibson’s 1984 novel Neuromancer—often built within a narrow and masculine idea of who gets to tinker\, hack\, and build. The cyberdecks filling our feeds today look different. They’re cute. \nFrom mermaid-shell Raspberry Pis to Hello Kitty makeup cases\, these devices have exploded in popularity over the past year\, thanks to women teaching each other to build artistic\, hyper-feminine computers online. \nCyberdecks push back against the sleek\, sealed\, and extractive technologies we rely on every day. While most consumer computers lock us into systems that are becoming increasingly unethical\, from non-consensual surveillance to automatic AI integration no one asked for\, cyberdecks are hacked together. Often built with femininity and sustainability in mind\, they’re personalised with cute and colourful items that would otherwise be thrown away. In an age of mass-produced devices\, cyberdecks turn technology into a form of self-expression. \nMake your personalised ‘mesh-berry’! 🫐\nIn this workshop\, you’ll build your very own\, personalised ‘mesh-berry’ 🫐 device: a local chat tool that runs on a mesh network. You don’t need WiFi\, internet\, or anything Big Tech related. To keep things accessible\, we won’t build a full computer\, but focus on a working chat tool you can actually take home and use\, change\, or build upon. \nGuided by web developer and artist Heerko van der Kooij\, you’ll learn how to hand-solder your own motherboard and how to style your chat program. Lilian Stolk from The Hmm will go a bit deeper into the aesthetic side of things\, looking at how (and why) to design a personal case for your device \nAfter the workshop\, you’ll walk away with a working mesh-berry that you can use to chat with other mesh-berry owners nearby. If your friends couldn’t make it to this workshop\, you’ll have picked up the skills to build one for them yourself. \nRequirements and Prep\n\nYou don’t need to have any experience with coding to join this workshop. The ticket price includes all the hardware you’ll need: a screen\, keyboard\, battery\, and speaker. We’ll provide some basic crafting materials\, but we ask you to bring your own case that is at least 5x7cm (a bag\, box\, tin\, or anything else you’d like to turn into your device’s shell) and extra bits and pieces to personalise it further. Think of stickers\, fabric\, beads\, paint\, or anything else that makes it yours. SUMMARY:The Cowan Paradox & Other Inconveniences
DESCRIPTION:During NDSM OPEN\, we’ll open our studio to present artist Sjef van Beers’ project The Cowan Paradox & Other Inconveniences\, including a new experimental iteration on it. \nWithin this project Sjef explores the relations between (domestic) labour\, (automation) technology and the supermarket through the medium of the self-scanner. The Cowan Paradox\, named after historian Ruth Schwartz Cowan\, describes how time spent on housework had not decreased between 1870 and 1970\, despite innovations in the household\, such  as the microwave or vacuum cleaner—the Industrial Revolution in the Home\, as Cowan puts it. More recent studies have shown that this paradox still holds today. Around the same time as domestic appliances entered our homes\, the supermarket started popping up and contributed to turning the home from a place of production into one of consumption. With more and more labour being automated\, how do we want to organise our lives? What do we even see as labour? And what role has the supermarket played in shaping our daily lives and living habits? \nThroughout the day\, Sjef will take small groups of people on an experimental supermarket expedition. We’ll head to a nearby Albert Heijn—on the Ms Van Riemsdijkweg—for a demo for the next stage of this research project. Here\, we’ll try out an interactive narrative that runs on custom software on the self-scanners\, a point-and-scan adventure\, if you will. You’ll be one of the first people to try this\, as Sjef is still developing this new chapter.
