The Hmm is a platform for internet culture. We explore and celebrate what people do online, and take a critical look at how this is influenced by the technology we use. We organise events, develop new formats, offer educational programmes and publish online research dossiers.
For our annual theme What was I looking at again? in 2026, we are looking for someone to help us with visual communication (1 day per week). Together with our audience communication professional, you will manage The Hmm’s communication channels. You will ensure that our social media channels accurately reflect what is happening online and that our activities stand out in a clear and recognisable way. This is a freelance assignment.
What will you be doing?
- You will create or search for images for our social media posts and stories.
- You will come up with fun posts or stories for Instagram, Pixelfed and Mastodon that examine internet phenomena (such as research for the ‘Word of the Week’ section).
- You will design promotional material and visuals for events (such as flyers, stickers and presentation slides, based on templates).
- You will design custom visuals for the newsletter, emotes during events and grant applications.
- During events, you will provide support by creating and sharing Stories.
Our ideal candidate:

- Is creative and can independently translate ideas into attractive visuals and posts.
Is enthusiastic about our organisation and knows how to visually translate The Hmm’s “serious but fun” tone of voice. - Can switch gears quickly and set priorities, even during events or deadlines.
- Has experience with basic design software (such as Adobe Indesign, Photoshop)
- Is flexible and comfortable with a varied range of tasks, from social media to event materials and presentations.
The Hmm is a growing organisation. We are a small and close-knit team of four people working in a flat organisation. We are open to the qualities and input of all employees and encourage innovative thinking. Our office is located at the NDSM in Amsterdam. Hybrid working is possible.
